- W2021751608 abstract "Recent events have focused the attention of social scientists on the prevalence of both active and latent conflict in groups, communities, and larger social units. Outbreaks of intergroup violence revolving about race, class, ethnic and national background, age, and sex inequalities suggest the presence of latent conflict, easily sparked by even trivial incidents. But more remarkable and less well understood are the many occasions when inflammatory incidents fail to ignite highly combustible situations. We need to understand better the mechanisms that sometimes sublimate conflict when it threatens to escalate beyond tolerable levels. Critical examinations of the writing of history, investigations into the sociology of knowledge, and contemporary approaches in social-psychology have underlined the close relationship between beliefs about events and about group processes and structure. Conflict produces one version of reality: harmony produces another. Obversely beliefs about the nature of events foster subsequent development in directions of escalated conflict, accommodation, or conciliation. Any study of mechanisms that sublimate conflict must take note of the part played by integrative and divisive beliefs.
