- W2021784080 abstract "Rabbits fed a lysine-deficient diet (D) containing 52 mg lysine, 1 gm cholesterol, and 6 gm elaidinized olive oil daily for 84 days had at the end of that time lower lipid concentrations in their serum and less aortic atherosclerosis than did control rabbits fed a lysine-normal diet (N) containing 552 gm lysine, 1 gm cholesterol, and 6 gm elaidinized olive oil. Rabbits fed a very lysine-deficient diet (F) containing 22 mg lysine, 1 gm cholesterol, and 6 gm elaidinized olive oil daily for 84 days had at the end of that time serum lipid concentrations quite similar to the normal-lysine control rabbits (N); however, the severity of aortic atherosclerosis in the lysine-deficient (F) rabbits was significantly less than that found in lysine-deficient group D. There was a marked failure of growth and some weight loss in the rabbits fed the lysine-deficient diets, and their terminal body and organ weights were markedly smaller. There was no close association between body weights, terminal serum lipid concentrations, and/or severity of aortic atherosclerosis, and it was concluded that the weight loss in the lysine-deficient rabbits was not closely correlated to the terminal serum lipid concentrations or to the severity of atherosclerosis that developed. Portal cirrhosis which occurred in some rabbits of all three groups was highly variable but was more severe in the lysine-deficient rabbits." @default.
