- W2021840239 abstract "The classic Turner (1953) method of determining σ1 and σ3 from an analysis of calcite twins is compared with a graphical method, modified after Dietrich and Song (1984), and a newly devised method which treats calcite twin-glide directions and twin planes in an analogous way to slickensides on fault planes. All three methods provide similar positions for σ1, but none gives a reliable position for σ3 if a c-axes preferred orientation exists. σ3 can most successfully be identified as the axis of a girdle of Turner “compression” axes. Computer-assisted adaptations of the Turner method are recommended as the most rapid and internally consistent means of determining σ1 and σ3. The manual graphical method provides a useful check on Turner determinations of σ1, and a means of cleaning data." @default.
