Gradient gel electrophoresis showed a linear decrease of LDL with increasing levels of vesicles. Concomitantly, increasing amounts of material with dimensions greater than 50 nm appeared at the top of the gel. When isolated by velocity ultracentrifugation, the turbid product had a cholesterol: protein weight ratio similar to native LDL but a phospholipid: protein ratio over three-fold greater. Electron microscopy showed that this material consisted of closely associated particles with dimensions similar to those of starting LDL and vesicles. These data demonstrate aggregation of LDL and vesicles upon incubation without a significant change in their particle size. Prevention of aggregate formation by pretreatment of LDL with trypsin indicates the involvement of apolipoprotein B in this process." @default.
