- W2021850110 abstract "The purpose of this study was to compare two contrasting training models, namely high resistance training (HRT) and prolonged submaximal training (PST) on the expression of the Na+-K+ ATPase concentration in vastus lateralis. The HRT group (˙VO2peak = 45.3±1.9 ml/kg/min,[horizontal bar over]X±SE, n=9) performed 6-8 repetitions maximal each of squats, leg presses and leg extensions, 3 × week for 12 wk, while the PST group (˙VO2peak = 44.4±6.6 ml/kg/min, n=7) cycled 5-6× wk for 2h/day at 68% ˙VO2peak for 11 wk. In the HRT group, Na+-K+ ATPase (pmol/g wet wt) measured with the3 H-ouabain binding technique showed no change from 0 (289±22) to 4 wk (283±16) increased (P<0.05) by 14% at 8 wk (329±23) and remained stable until 12 wk (319±19). In contrast, with PET training initial increases (P<0.05) in Na+-K+ ATPase of 32% were not observed until 6 wks (251±37; 288±36; 332±44 for 0, 3, 6 wks, respectively) with no further change observed at 9 (324±42) and 11(351±52) wks. The maximal activity of malate dehydrogenase (moles/kg protein/hr) although unchanged with HRT, increased (P<0.05) by 34% with PET. It is concluded that PET represents a more potent stimulus for increasing both the oxidative and Na+-K+ ATPase potential in skeletal muscle." @default.
