• W2021908421 abstract "Abstract The studies reported here bridge two research areas that have traditionally been handled by means of separate empirical paradigms and separate theoretical orientations. The one area is constituted by the issue of the individual's consistency in responding to a trait-list; the second area is the realm of consistency theory, in which the primary interest has been the individual's establishing consistency with respect to a small number of cognitive elements—normally two. The starting point of the present studies is the premise that uncertainty in a behavioral realm instigates an orientation toward consistency; in short, uncertainty within a situation can serve as a starting point for the individual's attempting to view aspects of the situation—target persons included—as more internally consistent. The first study shows that uncertainty in a performance realm (art) relates to a relative preference for a trait-characterization of the artist that is internally consistent. The subsequent six studies (Studies 2–7) all involve the subjects' rating a particular target person, or target organization, by means of trait-lists. The six studies combined indicate that lowered or threatened certainty results in a more consistent responding to the traint-list in question. Further, in accord with findings from consistency theory, these effects are observed primarily at the very beginning of the trait lists." @default.
