- W2022021952 abstract "ISEE-239 Abstract: Epidemiologic studies of disinfection by-products (DBPs) and reproductive outcomes have been hampered by misclassification of exposure. A major source of misclassification arises from non-uniform formation of DBPs throughout the distribution system, resulting in intra-system spatial variation. One approach to mitigate this misclassification is to select communities for epidemiologic investigations that are served by water distribution systems with low spatial variability. We conducted a feasibility study to identify and test methods for community selection using the Information Collection Rule (ICR) database, assembled by the U.S. EPA. The ICR database contains quarterly DBP concentrations collected between 1997 and 1998 from the distribution systems of 198 facilities serving at least 100,000 persons collected between 1997 and 1998. We identified sites with low spatial variability that had high concentrations of chlorinated trihalomethanes (THMs), high concentrations of brominated trihalomethanes and low concentrations of total trihalomethanes (TTHM). We classified spatial variation of THMs within these distribution systems using two methods: (1) a two-way analysis of variance, and (2) cutpoints for risk identified from prior epidemiologic studies. Using these methods, we identified 17 sites with low spatial variability by both the ANOVA method and by the cutpoint method; Only 3 sites were identified by both methods. In general, it was more difficult to identify sites with a high proportion of brominated, as opposed to chlorinated, THMs. Our findings provide a simple method for a priori selection of sites with low spatial variability as a means to reduce exposure misclassification in epidemiologic studies of DBPs." @default.
