The process always consists of consecutive bond breaking and occasional healing steps. Each step is described by a rate constant that has a superficial resemblance to the Arrhenius equation: the difference is developed and described in detail. It is shown that the complexity of the environment assisted fracture demands that the failure conditions should be represented by a kinetics equation that is composed of the rate constants appropriate to the material and environment.
