- W2022124298 abstract "Ammonoid septal sutures are fractal objects characterized by a mean fractal dimension (D) around 1.37 (after 57 measurements over ten different genera), which tends to increase throughout the ontogenetic sequence. These D values are typical of the so called Saffman-Taylor instability, a mechanism leading to the viscous fingering process. This instability is created at the interface between two fluids when the more viscous one is pushed by the less vicous one. We concluded that the same boundary conditions could have been obtained at the margin of the body-cameral fluid interface (the septal suture template). The marked positive allometry of the perisiphonal elements and the ontogenetic increase in complexity of the septal sutures are directly derived from the model. The similarity of the physics underlying this experiment and the formation of septa, suggests that ammonoid septal sutures are the result of a morphogenetic process involving a Saffman-Taylor type instability. Les structures septales des ammonoïdes sont des objets fractaux caractérisés par une dimension fractale (D) d'environ 1,37 (d'après 57 mesures sur 10 genres différents) qui tend à croître au cours de la séquence ontogénique. Ces valuers de D sont typiques de l'instabilité de l'instabilité de Saffman-Taylor, mécanisme conduisant au processus d'interdigitation visqueuse. Nous en déduisons que les mêmes conditions limites ont pu être réalisées sur le bor de l'interface fluide de la loge. L'allométrie positive des éléments périsiphonaux et l'augmentation de la complexité suturale durant l'ontogenèse sont directement dérivées du modèle. La similarité de la physique sous-tendant cette expérience avec la formation des septes suggère que les sutures septales des ammonoïdes sont le résultat d'un processus morphogénétique impliquant une instabilité du type Saffman-Taylor." @default.
