- W2022128990 abstract "Thyroid disorders are highly prevalent in both undeveloped and industrialized regions of the world.44 In general, these disorders are more common in women than men and increase in prevalence with age. In particular, the onset of autoimmune thyroid disease is relatively uncommon in the interval between the neonatal period and mid-adolescence.22 Thyroid function tests are among the most common investigations ordered in clinical laboratories. Although these tests are relatively inexpensive individually, they account for a disproportionately large amount of health care expenditure for diagnostic testing.43 The principal categories of thyroid disorders most commonly encountered by practitioners who are not in endocrine specialty practice are generalized goiter, thyroid nodules, clinical hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, and abnormal thyroid function tests in clinically euthyroid individuals. This review is designed to provide the obstetrician-gynecologist with a practical guide to the initial investigation and diagnosis of the common types of incidentally discovered thyroid problems as they present. Therefore, disorders such as postpartum thyroiditis, the management of thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy, and the relationship between thyroid dysfunction and infertility, which are considered central to obstetric and gynecologic practice, are not reviewed in detail. Similarly, definitive management and follow-up of most thyroid disorders generally require the involvement of the patient′s family physician, internist, or endocrinologist with or without the support of a general or head and neck surgeon and are not comprehensively discussed here." @default.
