Sadoff, 16 September 2011 Accepted for publication by Elsie Walker, Guest Editor BACKGROUND SADOFF: My first question is about where you teach, what the demographic of the students is, and what their backgrounds are. BROWN: I first actually taught film music at NYU, as a summer school course. About three summers in a row they invited me to come and teach a film music course. SADOFF: Now was that the College of Arts and Sciences? BROWN: That was in the Tisch School of the Arts. SADOFF: Oh, so it was Cinema Studies. BROWN: Yes. And being Cinema Studies students, particularly at that time, anything that you said that was remotely not structuralist or Marxist or what have you got sort of attacked. I mean, they were good students and it was ok, but it wasn't my best teaching experience. SADOFF: So it was the original classical theory that was laid out there: Marxism, psychoanalysis? BROWN: Yeah, all that stuff. They didn't want to hear how the music is creating a certain psychological perspective, and things like that. SADOFF: And the students of classes that you've been teaching for the past 20-30 years, being in European Languages and Literatures at Queens College, were there film music classes taught there as well or was that strictly at the CUNY Graduate Center? BROWN: No, no, no, no, no. I think in my whole forty-two years at Queens College I've taught film music there twice. They just are not particularly open to it. There's not really room for it. It's now the Aaron Copland School of Music, and honestly I'm not on campus that much. I spend a lot of time at the Ph.D. programs in French and in Music at the CUNY Graduate Center. SADOFF: And these are doctoral students in musicology and composition? BROWN: OK, now the thing that's interesting here is that I really think that it opened up when, having been a member of the Ph.D. program in French at the CUNY Graduate Center for quite some time, I was asked by the Ph.D. program in music to become a member of that department. That's a very prestigious program, so I'm very honored to be a part of it. SADOFF: And more unusually that was one of the few places in musicology that would have film music, for the longest time." @default.
