- W2022138460 abstract "Growth in contraceptive use and in the number of couples of reproductive age will greatly increase the demand for contraceptive supplies in the developing world. The largest increases in contraceptive prevalence are projected to occur in Africa where pill supplies will have to increase from 47 million cycles in 1985 to 199 million cycles in the year 2000 if that continent maintains current patterns of method preference and achieves the medium variant total fertility rates projected by the United Nations. In Asia IUD use will grow from 286000 if that continent maintains current patterns of method preference and achieves the medium variant total fertility rates projected by the UN. In Asia IUD use will grow from 286000 units to almost 1.4 million units during that period and condom use will increase from 715 million to almost 2 billion units. The need for contraceptive commodities will also expand in Latin American but not by as much as in other regions. Results of a projection indicate that the US Agency for International Development (AID) will have to increase its pill supplies to Africa by over 300% to supply the same proportion of demand in 2000 that it did in 1985. It would have to expand condom supplies to Africa by more than 200% to Asia by some 170% and to Latin American by almost 100%. Because of an apparent oversupply of IUDs less growth in demand for this device is anticipated. Among the implications of these findings are a need for realistic country-specific projections of the growth in contraceptive commodities as well as a need for planning how AID other donors and developing countries themselves will meet the expanded costs.
