- W2022143010 abstract "A recent opinion article was aimed at stimulating a constructive debate in the parasitology community working on feline lungworms [ 1 Traversa D. Di Cesare A. Feline lungworms: what a dilemma. Trends Parasitol. 2013; 29: 423-430 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (75) Google Scholar ]. A letter by Otranto et al. [ 2 Otranto D. et al. Troglostrongylus brevior and a nonexistent ‘dilemma’. Trends Parasitol. 2013; 29: 517-518 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (35) Google Scholar ] considered as inexistent any scientific ‘dilemma’ for Aelurostrongylus abstrusus and Troglostrongylus brevior only, although, as discussed in [ 1 Traversa D. Di Cesare A. Feline lungworms: what a dilemma. Trends Parasitol. 2013; 29: 423-430 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (75) Google Scholar ], the term ‘dilemma’ referred to feline lungworms in general. It was suggested [ 2 Otranto D. et al. Troglostrongylus brevior and a nonexistent ‘dilemma’. Trends Parasitol. 2013; 29: 517-518 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (35) Google Scholar ] that ‘without a doubt’ A. abstrusus and T. brevior (but not Troglostrongylus subcrenatus) have been misdiagnosed in domestic cats for a long time. Although cases of misidentification or missed diagnosis cannot be ruled out and are likely, it is hard to find such scientific evidence in the international literature, and no demonstration has been reported to corroborate this hypothesis. It is true that A. abstrusus and T. brevior could share ecological and biological features, but the current international literature available for lungworms in Felis catus does not contain evidence of frequent occurrence of co-infections and/or misdiagnosis, nor of common and overlapping transmission patterns, although plausible. However, the existence of some records in local and/or outdated reports cannot be excluded." @default.
