- W2022145971 abstract "There are few paleodemographic studies worth trusting, given the amazing differences among authors when it comes to giving an age to the same skeleton. Therefore, it is generally quite useless to seek to compare, on a demographic level, the populations studied by different anthropologists. One American author, R. L. Blakely, has indicated a way out of this impasse. He was able legitimately to compare three Indian cemeteries, one each from the Archaic period (908 B.C.), the Hopewell (A.D. 187), and the Middle Mississippian (A.D. 920-1120). Unfortunately, the use he has made of the anthropological results is inaccurate on a demographic level, and his conclusions are quite doubtful. Taking into account the current uncertainties in age determination, it is necessary to approach demographic study itself in an original way. In this work, the author shows under what circumstances, and how, one can fruitfully utilize the existing facts. From the data given by Blakely, we then end up with an unexpected result: we can see, in fact, that there is no significant difference between the Archaic and the Hopewell period, except with regard to the very old. Between the Hopewell period and the following one, on the contrary, we find for all age groups a very pronounced deterioration of the demographic situation. Around the year 1000, the mortality rate of adults of all ages may have been greater by one-third or one-half than it was at the beginning of the Christian era. Such a result needs to be checked with other sites, strictly following some of the conditions outlined in the article. This kind of approach can be extended to all paleodemographic comparisons between different populations." @default.
