- W2022146542 abstract "The present investigations were suggested by the hypothesis that ionizing radiations may play role in the development of atherosclerosis. Indeed, in both human subjects and experimental animals, this disease is more or less closely associated with aging; and, in turn, the life-shortening effect of radiation has been often interpreted as an acceleration of the normal process of aging, although this interpretation may only be a half-truth which largely reflects the crudity of the original parameter-life expectancy (1). The occurrence of spontaneous atherosclerosis in the aortas and coronary arteries of certain breeds of pigeons-for example, White Carneaux-and the striking similarity of the lesions with those found in human subjects (2) seemed to offer good opportunity for study of the relationships between radiation, aging, and atherosclerosis. Moreover, since other breeds of pigeons-for example, Show Racersexhibit much lower frequency of aortic lesions (2), it was also of interest to investigate whether ionizing radiations would overcome the genetic resistance exhibited by the aortas of these birds. In pigeons of both susceptible and resistant breeds, addition of cholesterol to the diet increases the prevalence and the severity of atherosclerosis of the aortas (3) as well as of the coronary arteries (3, 4). Accordingly, in several of our experiments the combined effects of radiation and cholesterol feeding were studied. Alterations of the metabolism of lipids, especially cholesterol, have been often implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. For this consideration and in view of the large number of irradiated and nonirradiated pigeons which had to be used" @default.
