- W2022153448 abstract "Ova production as measured by average implantation number in young (primipara) mice as compared with old breeders (of 14 plus or minus months of age) is essentially the same, when they are mated to young and virile males of the same strain. X irradiation of embryos at 1.5 days (two-cell stage) showed a significant difference between fetuses of the young and old females with respect to the percentage of normals (higher in the young) and the percentage of resorptions and congenital defects (higher in the older females). X irradiation of embryos at 8.5 days of gestation (during neurogenesis) reduced the percentage of normals at lower levels of x irradiation, and to a much greater degree among the old breeders than among the young mice. There were twice as many intra- uterine deaths and resorptions among the older mice after 200 r, but about one- third as many gross central nervous system anomalies among the old breeders. This disparity is reduced when it is emphasized that, since the old breeders lose more embryos, in utero, there are fewer survivors to develop persisting congenital anomalies. If the percentage of central nervous system anomalies among survivors only is computed, the disparity still showsmore » a preponderance among the younger mice, but the relation is reduced to 26.0 and 23.4%. Whether the disparity in reaction of embryos of young and old mice is due to aged eggs or to senile physiology of the mother, or to both factors, is not clear. Since the unirradiated controls of these two ages of mice do not show the same degree of disparity, it seems unequivocal that the x irradiated embryos of the old females are relatively the more radiosensitive, in terms of mortality, but the embryos of the young mice are the more sensitive in terms of surviving morbidity.
