- W2022154891 abstract "The study by Berry et al analyzes patient characteristics, health services utilization patterns, and admitting diagnoses for over 1000 hospitalizations for children with complex conditions who were enrolled in five children's hospital-based complex-care coordination programs and clinics. The essence of the results is that children with complex medical conditions, who are cared for in structured clinical programs experienced high rates of hospitalization (mean 3.1 admissions during the two-year study period), lengthy hospital stays (mean 12.2 days), and high 30-day readmission rates (25%). Although there was considerable variability across programs related to types of patients enrolled and characteristics of hospitalizations, these data provide valuable facts upon which hypotheses for improvement can be generated and tested, as well as immediate clues to next steps that might improve both care and utilization of resources. The accompanying editorial puts the findings of this “early” study in context and illuminates the path ahead. Parents of children with trisomy 18 were counseled that their babies would die in infancy. Children with cystic fibrosis were lucky to make it into their 20s. Patients with profound neurologic impairment often died at an early age of pneumonia, and extremely low birth weight infants succumbed with alarming frequency to necrotizing enterocolitis, hyaline membrane disease, or sepsis.
