- W2022161454 abstract "The dry sliding behaviour of sintered and steam treated iron, Fe-2wt.%Cu and Fe-0.3wt.%C was studied as a function of sliding speed. The wear tests were performed with a disk on disk apparatus using AISI 4340 steel as the counterface material. The results of the wear tests and of the microstructural characterization of the worn specimens and debris show that the wear rate is low and independent of the chemical composition as long as the oxide layer, produced by the steam treatment, is able to carry out its lubricant action between the sliding surfaces. After removal of the oxide layer by adhesion, two different wear mechanisms are active: a delamination wear mechanism at low sliding speed and a delamination-oxidation mechanism at high sliding speed. When delamination is the predominant mechanism, copper and carbon are very effective in improving wear resistance. However, when oxidative wear occurs, the influence of the chemical composition of the base material becomes less important." @default.
