- W2022171452 abstract "The ingenious invention of the electronic pager is definitely one of the tremendous leaps of the 20th century. The further advance of a pager that vibrates allows the location of its owner, at any given time, without disturbing the closest of neighbours, be it in the consultation room or lecture hall. Some months ago while going through chronic fatigue or continuing life pressures, I developed a nervous twitch involving the superficial abdominal wall muscles over my right flank. Serving as a member of the sole emergency squad in a large rural area, I always grow anxious whenever being paged. With the incessant fear of the possibility of trauma, I was the only apparent victim when during the course of a week I repeatedly whipped out the pager from its holder only to find that it had not been activated. The culprit, brief superficial muscle contraction, later mobilised itself to the left hip to which I switched the pager as a challenge test.I also had a potentially dangerous experience with my pager, while standing at the top of a ladder to reach electrical wires with the mains turned off. This was the particular moment ideally chosen by the practice nurse to notify me. The vibrating sensation induced while handling “live wires” associated with the feeling of a high voltage electric shock practically threw me off balance. A simple way to prevent an incident, if anticipated of course, would be to change the pager to the beeping mode before indulging in such activity!
