- W2022184679 abstract "The Na+-dependent binding of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in rat cerebral hemispheres was studied by subcellular fractionation and double-labelling procedures. The distributions of tracer amounts of [2,3-3H] GABA and [U-14C] surcrose acquired by P1 (crude nuclear) and P2 (synaptosomal, mitochondrial) particles during homogenization at O° C were compared in the presence of 40 mM Na+ and in the absence of added Na+. Results indicated that addition of Na+ to the homogenizing fluid promotes extra binding of GABA to both P1 and P2 particles and that these processes are age-dependent, but different. GABA binding to P1 particles increased with age until 21-22 days after which it remained rather constant. On the other hand, a more dramatic developmental change occurred in the binding of GABA to P2 fractions (which contain the majority of the nerve endings) which was maximal in the brains of rats 11 and 15 days old and which declined in older rats." @default.
