- W2022198132 abstract "Thomas W. Taylor (1819-1892), better known in his day as Beeswax, was a mill worker and weaver, a militant abolitionist, an author of popular satires and cheap verse, and a nationally recognized labor activist. He was one of the most prominent and idiosyncraticleaders of the U.S. labor movement in the Gilded Age. A Chartist in his native England, Taylor was a founding member of the AFL and attended its first convention in November 1881. Old Beeswax was also a leader of the Knights of Labor, for whom he wrote the foremost workers' anthem of the era, Storm the Fort, Ye Knights of Labor. In the late 1880s, Taylor concluded his career in the labor movement by winning election as burgess of the nation's preeminent labor t o w n Homestead. 1 The election of Taylor as Homestead's chief municipal officer was most apposite. For throughout his adult life, Taylor had pleaded the case for republicanism and against acquisit ivenessthe very case that Homestead steelworkers and their families pleaded in the Lockout of 1892. And yet, for a time, Taylor had also been an avid businessman. He was a cotton dealer during the Civil War, a successful businessman in the lumber trade, and at the end of his life he prospered in the sale of residential real estate. In his choice to pursue these private commercial ventures during a busy life of public commitment, Taylor gives substance to the critical observation of Joseph P. McDonne l l ano the r" @default.
