- W2022200796 abstract "Since Liljencrants and Lindblom (1972), researchers have attempted to predict vowel inventories from assumptions about auditory perception [e.g., Lindblom (1986); Schwartz et al. (1997); de Boer (2000)]. Our point of departure is Schwartz et al.’s dispersion-focalization theory (DFT), which calculates the optimality of a vowel system as a weighted combination of dispersion and focalization. Like other dispersion-based models, this model has considerable strengths, but also some shortcomings. One is its inability to derive “vertical” vowel systems or even systems with the phoneme schwa. We explore whether this problem can be resolved by extending DFT to include a production-based parameter that models the articulatory cost of vowels. This attempt depends on several variables, e.g., what articulatory cost is assigned to each vowel; how total articulatory cost is weighted with respect to perceptual parameters. On the one hand, the articulatory parameter does not improve the model’s overall match rate with attested inventories. On the other, a qualitative improvement is that three-vowel inventories now include the Kabardian “vertical” system, and four-vowel inventories now include schwa, as in Paiwan and Yupik. However, larger systems still lack schwa, a problem remaining that can hopefully be solved by further exploration of the model’s properties." @default.
