- W2022203801 abstract "The gametocytes of Plasmodium knowlesi(which are formed about midday at cell division of the asexual forms in the blood) undergo a rapid process of development; after 24 hours they are morphologically distinguishable from the asexual forms, after 36 hours (i.e., during the night) they are mature and able to infect mosquitoes, and by next morning they degenerate and disappear. Apparently the synchronous cycle of the asexual parasites in the blood is orientated so that the brief presence of mature gametocytes in the blood coincides with the hours when the transmitting mosquitoes usually suck blood. Similar development takes place in P. cynomolgi(which has a 48-hour asexual cycle) and with the avian P. cathemerium (which has a 24-hour cycle). Probably it takes place with most of the periodic malaria parasites of man, mammals and birds with the exception of P. falciparum in which the development of gametocytes is apparently different. The orientation and synchronisation of the asexual malaria cycle depends upon the 24-hour cycle of the host's body-temperature. If this temperature cycle is inverted in monkeys infected with P. knowlesi or P. cynomolgi the malaria cycle is inverted also, and cell division occurs about midnight instead of about midday." @default.
