- W2022208249 abstract "This paper is an attempt to reframe the theological preparation of future teachers of Roman Catholic religious education (RE) within the boundaries of canon law on the one hand and practical culture theology on the other hand. In Germany and Flanders (the Northern and Dutch speaking part of Belgium) RE teachers are prepared at theological faculties and institutions within universities and schools of higher education. After finishing they receive the mandate by the bishop and are sent to their teaching position. The gap, however, between the official church and the concrete school environment is huge. Young teachers feel insecure in their ambivalent position between church and school. They are themselves part of youth culture, they gained theological basics and pedagogical and didactical know how, but they often lack the practical theological sensibility and theological discernment to deal with the difficult questions of their pupils, which are partly their own. The challenges both for church and theological institutions to explore new ways of professional spirituality and critical thinking with young adults as future RE teachers—or, in the words of Vatican II, preparing lay theologians for reading the signs of the times in the light of the gospel—are immense." @default.
