- W2022235971 abstract "Aspergillosis is a common fungal infection in a wide range of birds. Although free-living birds tend to be negative for Aspergillus, captive environments or stress may play a role in this fungal disease. Recent data suggest that gross and histopathologic lesions common in Aspergillus infections may be caused by the presence of Pasteurella multocida lipopolysaccharide (LPS). In fact, LPS by itself may produce lesions similar to those produced by conidia. Studies exploring the pathogenesis are reviewed, and two important antifungal drugs are discussed: amphotericin B and itraconazole. The nature and use of these two antifungals are explored. Acidification of itraconazole resulted in increased concentrations of the antifungal metabolite hydroxyitraconazole, allowing it to reach physiologically privileged sites such as the brain. Plasma concentrations of itraconazole vary with the type of bird, possibly because of differences in plasma protein binding between species. Pharmacokinetic considerations are important in developing treatment regimens for mycotic pneumonias." @default.
