- W2022242613 abstract "The objective of this study was to examine the phase resetting capability of novel auditory stimuli on pre-stimulus EEG. Evoked potentials (EPs) were collected from 15 healthy volunteers who were presented with pairs of clicks (S1 & S2) separated by 450 to 550 msec. Pairs of stimuli were separated by 8 seconds. Sixty single trials were collected in each block. Single trials, obtained from each subject, were clustered into two mutually exclusive groups using fuzzy clustering. From each group, an EP was computed by averaging all trials assigned to it (partial EPs) resulting in two EPs from the S1 part and two from the S2 part. The synchronization between the two partial EPs from each subject were compared to each other. Synchronization measures the percentage of time that activity increased or decreased simultaneously in the pair. The degree in which the partial EPs become in-phase after stimulus presentation can be used as an indication of the phase resetting capabilities of the stimulus. Synchronization was computed for the 100 msec immediately prior to stimulus presentation, for S1 (S1pre) and S2 (S2pre) separately. The index was also computed for the first 100 msec following stimulus presentation (S1post & S2post). The S1pre mean (16.07) and the S1post mean (46.93) differed significantly (p < 10−6), indicating that the “novel” S1 stimulus leads to phase reorganization of the ongoing EEG. The S2pre and S2post were less different (p < 0.05), indicating that less phase resetting occurred in response to the “irrelevant” S2 stimulus." @default.
