- W2022253656 abstract "High temperature superconducting electronics (HTSCE) technology is based on the ability to grow and process thin films of the oxide materials. The first such films were made in the spring of 1987, and those films [1] can therefore be regarded as the initial step towards a new technology. However, if the complexities of these materials had been fully appreciated at that time, the optimistic projections of when a technology would be viable would have been much more muted. It is also probably true that venture capitalists would have felt less urgency to create new HTSCE companies, if they had better understood the materials science of YBCO! In the past decade, remarkable progress has been made both in understanding the science of the materials, and also in engineering them into devices with performance that is beginning to be of interest to customers. Thus it is probably fair to claim that the first generation of HTSCE technology is at hand. I doubt that anyone feels it is yet adequate for all the products being planned, but in most applications the performance of the films and devices is many orders of magnitude better than that of 1987 and 1988. In this review, I will attempt to summarize what I believe were the key advances of the decade, from a personal and very applied point of view." @default.
