- W2022269399 abstract "In laser -produced breakdown, genera t ion of shock waves which p ropaga te in t he surrounding m e d i u m m a y occur. These blast waves appear in b reakdown in gases, typ ica l ly a t a gas pressure of 1 a t m or more ; when breakdown is p roduced on solid surfaces, shock waves begin to appear a t pressures of a few torr . The aim of th is le t te r is to repor t our first results which suggest a me thod to increase t e m p e r a t u r e and dens i ty of laser-produced plasma and thus to lengthen i ts life. The m e t h o d makes use of the blast w a v e genera ted by p lasma expansion to compress t he p lasma itself. This is possible if the shock w a v e is reflected by a solid surface before degenera t ing into a sonic wave . lqotice t h a t acoust ic re f lec t iv i ty at a gas-solid in ter face for smooth a reas is typ ica l ly near to un i ty (~). W h e n the ref lected w a v e collides wi th the plasma, this is recompressed and hea ted . The hea t ing increases the in terna l energy of the plasma, which expands produc ing a n e w shock wave . This process wil t subsist un t i l t he p lasma condi t ions (density, t e m p e r a t u r e and therefore pressure) allow shock waves to be genera ted ; in o ther words un t i l the shock w a v e compress ing the p lasma remains ul t rasonic . In fact t he ref lec ted-wave f ront will h a v e a higher pressure t h a n the incident w a v e (i.e. plasma pressure) only if the Mach n u m b e r is M > I . F o r M ~ I the pressures become equal . We checked t h e m e t h o d in var ious condi t ions al lowed by our exper imenta l set-up. Tests were pe r fo rmed in He and Ar, b o t h conta ined in a quar tz spherical cell. Breakdown was also p roduced in Ta and brass surfaces con ta ined in hemispher ica l cavi t ies . F ina l ly we checked the effect by p roduc ing breakdown in t he bulk of a homogeneous glass sample ; in th is case the cav i ty was the ex te rna l surface of t he sample. The inves t iga t ion was made by observing the l ight emi t t ed dur ing the ent i re process. Changes in l igh t in tens i ty dur ing laserinduced breakdown h a v e a l ready been observed (2,3) in previous , conven t iona l exper iments on var ious samples. The unexpec ted behav iour enabled us to suppose a screening effect of the shock w a v e on the (( fireball ~). Before the wave becomes sonic, the screening effect seems to end and l ight in tens i ty rises again." @default.
