- W2022274981 abstract "The author presents and discusses a survey of published papers from 1965 to 1997 on adverse effects arising from acupuncture treatments. A number of serious side effects, for example, cardiac tamponade, pneumothorax, endocarditis, hepatitis, spinal lesions as well as minor side effects, such as fainting and skin reactions, are described. The majority of the reported side effects are due to either lack of basic medical background or failure to apply the correct sterile techniques. In particular, the education of nonmedical trained acupuncturists gives rise for concern. Thus, it was found that serious side effects were nearly three times more frequent after treatment by nonmedically trained acupuncturists than treatment by medically trained acupuncturists. The need for urgent legalization and standards of training is stressed. Despite some serious side effects, the safety of acupuncture should be judged on the results from competent practitioners who use acupuncture correctly. Acupuncture must be considered an extremely safe therapeutic procedure with rare and easily avoided complications." @default.
