The following praiseworthy efforts were noted: (a) appraisal of other investigators' as well as of one's own data when the latter were being interpreted, (b) a trend toward framing new hypotheses about the results of a given investigation when these results served to test or to elaborate upon existing theories, and (c) the development of new theoretical formulations. However, from the statistically sophisticated studies concerned with personality to the more impressionistic surveys encountered in symposia papers, the studies during the last three years in toto reflected a picture of chaos, from which, however, there now seems to be more promise amid an increasing sophistication of more widely tested, perhaps even more generally acceptable, theories. A kind of anarchy has appeared to plague the literature in terms of an apparent lack of criteria that were generally acceptable even to investigators with seemingly comparable training, experience, and stated commitments." @default.
