- W2022287766 abstract "Many reports from the sunny Middle East region have shown a contradictory high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in different subgroups. Therefore, a cross-sectional study was performed to assess vitamin D status and its lifestyle determinants in a sample of Lebanese ambulatory patients referred by their physician to test vitamin D levels. A total of 105 subjects (87 women and 18 men; mean age 49.21 ± 14.59) years) were recruited from a university hospital (latitude 34˚ north) during a period of 4 months. Vitamin D concentrations ranged from 8 to 137.5 nmol/l with a mean 25-hydroxyvitamin D of 53.26 ± 30.92 nmol/l. The prevalence of deficiency (<50 nmol/l), insufficiency (50-74.9 nmol/l) and sufficiency (≥75 nmol/l) were respectively 51.43%, 21.9% and 26.67%. Vitamin D intake from food varied between 6 and 271.77 IU/d (mean intake 81.98 ± 67.41 IU/d). Among the sample, 27.62% were already taking nutritional supplements containing vitamin D. Moreover, 74.3% of the patients presented one or more symptoms related to vitamin D deficiency, 86.7% had one or more conditions predisposing to deficiency and only 2.9% did not show any symptom or predisposing conditions. In a multilinear regression analysis, dietary vitamin D intake, supplement use and sun exposure between 10.00 and 15.00 hours were independently predictive of vitamin D concentrations (P<0.0001 each). In this sample of ambulatory patients, results show high percentage of vitamin D inadequacy and particular contributing factors that should be taken into consideration when suspecting vitamin D deficiency in medical practice." @default.
