- W2022305027 abstract "The determination of the average kinetic energy of an ion cloud stored in a Paul trap requires a perfect model of the ion spatial and velocity distributions. The validity of such models is tested by experiments. We have developed a time-of-flight method to measure the spatial and energy distribution of the confined ions. The stored ion cloud is released from the trap by interrupting the rf potential as it crosses zero whereupon the ions drift to a detector. The measured time profile is compared to a three-dimensional simulation which models the trapped-ion cloud using Gaussian statistics for the spatial and velocity distributions, the widths of which are determined by the rf averaged kinetic energy as the input parameter. A result of 0.65ifmmodepmelsetextpmfi{}0.15 eV for ${mathrm{N}}^{+}$ ions in a potential well of 4 eV compares very well to a previous determination made with the same apparatus under the same conditions using an energy calibration based on the measurement of the ${mathrm{N}}^{+}$-CO reaction of the known cross section." @default.
