- W2022307363 abstract "IT IS HARD to imagine a more congenial setting for a conference on library history than the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbiittel. This little town, full of half-timbered houses, retains many memorials of its time as the principal seat of the Dukes of Brunswick-Liineburg; and the most remarkable of them is the library. The 19th-century building houses the vast library of Duke Augustus the younger (1579-1666), of which Leibniz and Lessing were later librarians, and which forms the background to the great 'Augusteerhalle', with newly-cleaned vellum bindings reflecting the diffused lighting. A special exhibition had been mounted, using original documents to show the history of the Wolfenbiittellibrary through the 19th century, from the depredations of the Napoleonic period (later restored), to the demolition of the old Rotunda and the erection of the present building in 1884-87. The opening address, by Professor Paul Raabe, the Library's director, took up the same theme, stressing particularly the important part played by Friedrich Ebert and Carl Wilhelm Schonemann between 1823 and 1854. The theme of the conference was 'Libraries in the social and cultural changes of the 19th century'; four speakers dealt with academic and" @default.
