- W2022320857 abstract "The causal and functional aspects of a display known as dorsal pricking performed during the courtship of the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) were examined. This behaviour, a somewhat jerky pushing of the female with the dorsal side, is sometimes incorporated as a reaction to female approach in place of the leading to the nest action. In experiments using models it was found that pricking is incorporated when aggressive motivation is relatively high. Further studies demonstrated that, by inducing the female to cease following, the dorsal pricking display functions to facilitate the male's switch from high aggression to a greater sexual motivaion. It seems, therefore, to be a mechanism for self-adjustment of motivation. During the brief separation of male and female induced by the pricking the male performs ‘displacement’ nest activities. These actions, therefore, were studied in detail in order to determine whether their performance plays a causal role in the switch from high aggression to a state conducive to sexual behaviour. A series of experiments demonstrated that the performance of certain nest activities directly affects the adjustment that occurs." @default.
