- W2022346704 abstract "In Response: We appreciate the thoughtful comments of Dr. Anderson as well as her suggestions for potential research based on the theory of allostasis. Her suggestion to focus on intrapartum events as described in her letter is intriguing. While the concept of allostasis is gaining wider acceptance in stress research, to date, there have been limited investigational efforts to test the theory. Early efforts, cited in our article (Shannon et al., 2007Shannon M.T. King T.L. Kennedy H.P. Allostasis: A theoretical framework for understanding and evaluating perinatal health outcomes.Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing. 2007; 36: 125-134Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (51) Google Scholar), have focused on the relationship between chronic stressors to allostatic load. Recently additional work has been published that documented associations between stress in adult caregivers and allostatic mediators (Clark et al., 2007Clark M.S. Bond M.J. Hecker J.R. Environmental stress, psychological stress and allostatic load.Psychology and Health Medicine. 2007; 12: 18-30Crossref PubMed Scopus (90) Google Scholar). However, very few reports in the literature about pregnancy, intrapartum, and postpartum issues have used allostatic theory to explain possible associations between stress and adverse perinatal health outcomes. Dr Anderson offers several suggestions for potential research studies using allostasis and also points out some of the unique challenges of conducting research to further investigate possible associations between allostasis and adverse perinatal outcomes. We hope that nursing researchers investigating perinatal health issues will consider this theory when investigating the relationship between stress, adaptation, and outcomes." @default.
