- W2022350114 abstract "Evidence has been accumulating that the guinea-pig is a particularly good animal in which to study urinary corticosteroid excretion. There are a number of reasons for this: (1) the daily urinary »corticoid« excretion is high (Bazzi & Nicolosi, 1952; Burstein, 1952; Ceresa & Canttaneo, 1951; Clayton & Prunty, 1951, 1953; Nadel & Schneider, 1951, 1952; Zondek & Burstein, 1952); (2) the blood »corticoid« levels are the highest among all mammals tested (Bush, 1951; Done et al., 1953); (3) the 3 free polar major corticosteroids found in the urine (6 β hydroxycortisol, 2 α hydroxycortisol, and cortisol) are formaldehydogenic, Porter-Silber positive, have specific sulfuric acid chromogens (Table 1) and reduce blue-tetrazolium; (4) the corticosteroids are excreted almost entirely in the urine in contrast to other rodents where a large portion is excreted in the feces (Wyngaarden et al., 1955); (5) β-glucuronidase (or acid) hydrolysis does not increase the amount extractable by" @default.
