- W2022384229 abstract "Charles Burney (1726-1814) enjoyed a long life that began in Handel's time and ended in Beethoven's years of maturity. As a pupil, lodger, and assistant to Arne he early became familiar with London's musical life, then continued his excellent musical education at Oxford, earning both the Bachelor and Doctor degree in music. He was a passable violinist and a fair harpsichordist, though a very mediocre composer, but he had excellent ears, and a keen and wide ranging mind. His readings in philosophy, history, and literature were extensive, not only in English but in Latin, French, and Italian. He was also vain and eager to secure social standing. As a sought after harpsichord teacher he had many pupils from families of high standing and assumed their manners and attitudes. His friends and acquaintances were countless, from George III to Burke, Samuel Johnson, Garrick, Captain Cook, to Rousseau, Diderot, and just about every musician of note. Eventually Burney purchased Isaac Newton's house, complete with observatory, had it repaired, and established there the nearest equivalent to the great French literary salons of the grand siecle. His appetite for music and his staying power were fantastic. Many a day on his continental travels he started out by attending Mass (if sung), then went to the library to examine old manuscripts and books, then called on some notable musician whom he made to play or sing for several hours, after which he went to Vespers, and in the evening to the opera, often eating in his coach to save time. The performance over, he got together with the local professors for shop talk until two or three in the morning. All this is the more astonishing because throughout his life Burney was physically frail." @default.
