Irradiated anoxically, R. stolonifer sporangiospores in suspensions containing 2-mercaptoethylamine (MEA) showed a nearly twofold increase in survival when plated without a 48-hour recovery period. After a 48-hour delay, however, equal numbers of survivors were found whether spores had been MEA-protected or not. 2. When spores were irradiated in suspensions in contact with air and plated immediately thereafter, MEA caused a twofold increase in the number of survivors. However, MEA protection during irradiation and subsequent recovery was partially additive. That is, more surviving colony formers were found after the 48-hour recovery period among spores that had been MEA-protected than among those that had not. 3. Spores produced from cultures grown on water agar were slightly less resistant to γ-radiation than were spores from a nutritionally richer medium.
