- W2022505938 abstract "Abstract A numerical study is made of the penetration of solar radiations of wavelength 100–600 nm (1000–6000 A) to heights below 100 km during the pre-sunrise period. Account is taken of absorption by molecular oxygen and ozone, Rayleigh scattering, and atmospheric refraction; the effects of changes in the height distribution of ozone are considered. The results of the computations are related to observations of the D region and of the airglow during the pre-sunrise period. The region of the solar spectrum responsible for the changes in D -region electron densities, indicated by v.l.f. and l.f. radio measurements, is identified and the electron detachment processes discussed. The atmospheric penetration of radiations believed to be involved in the excitation of the infra-red atmospheric band system of molecular oxygen is also considered." @default.
