- W2022520038 abstract "The British Party in opposition has now committed itself to retaining a substantial military presence in Malaysia should it be returned to office before withdrawal is completed in 1971. In so committing itself, Mr. Heath's party appears to assume that the present government's decision to withdraw, first by the mid-70s, then by 1971, was unilateral and made solely upon the basis of that government's estimate of what Britain's strategic policy should be in the light of her existing economic difficulties. This is the assumption normally made. It is generally accepted that it would be a good thing for Britain to stay if only she could afford it. It is taken for granted that the governments of Malaysia and Singapore are anxious for the British to remain. It is rarely asked whether the terms upon which they are willing for Britain to stay are in her own interests. Few people seem to realize that in the past few years the government of Malaysia has treated Britain, and her armed forces, as though they were there to do as Malaysia demands without questionrather like mercenaries, except that instead of being paid they were expected to pay increasingly for the privilege of being servants. It is further assumed by most people that the decision to withdraw would not have been made had the Party remained in office. The feeling that Britain should reconsider the deployment of forces east of Suez was by no means a monopoly of the Labour Party, even if we ignore the Liberal Party. The first radical changes were introduced in 1957 by a Government. In April 1964, when the Conservatives were still in office, The Times published a series of articles entitled A Party in Search of a Pattern. The author of the articles signed himself A Conservative. There was at the time a widely held belief that the author was in fact Mr. Enoch Powell. Whatever the identity of the author, the following extract from one of those articles was fully in line with views expressed by Mr. Powell (for example, at the Party Conference in October 1965, and to the present day). Referring to the commitments of Britain's armed forces, A Conservative said:" @default.
