- W2022631641 abstract "Interspecies competition between Drosophila melanogaster and D. simulans was studied for one generation in laboratory populations in vials. The average numbers produced in control and competition replicates were not significantly different, and were considerably below saturation densities that had been previously determined for these species from studies of larval competition. It is suggested that total numbers and the outcome of competition in this system are determined by genetic and environmental influence on fecundity and fertility, as modified by adult-larval interactions during the first few days of the oviposition period. Neither species had a significant advantage either in total numbers of adults produced or between-replicate dominance, but within-replicate dominance was pronounced, regardless of which species had a numerical advantage. The degree of dominance observed in discrete populations was greater than would be expected by chance, and apparently represents a species interaction between ovipositing adults or adults and larvae. A theoretical model of interspecies competition between melanogaster and simulans is presented." @default.
