- W2022632457 abstract "423 With the current popularity of group cycle exercise (spinning), the purpose of this study was to assess the relative intensity of a group cycle workout based on criterion responses determined from a maximal cycle ergometer test. Fifteen subjects were tested for VO2 max (open-circuit spirometry) with the Astrand maximal cycle protocol (MC). The subjects also completed a 30 min. video-taped group cycle workout (GC) while being measured for VO2 and heart rate (HR). The mean intensity of the entire 30 min. GC trial was approximately 80% of the MC criterion VO2 max (GC mean VO2 = 2.3 l·min−1). The mean peak data for both conditions were also analyzed with a repeated measures ANOVA (p. < 0.05). These data and ANOVA findings (p. < 0.05)* were: (Table)TableThe results show that the GC trial produced some responses that were similar to (i.e., VO2) and/or higher (i.e., HR, RER) than peak values derived from maximal cycle ergometery. These responses coincided with portions of the CG protocol where speed-play intervals and jumping techniques at very strong work efforts occured. The exertion incurred via sprint intervals and increased involvement of the lower body musculature when lifting off and on the seat (jumping) may be key contributors in eliciting maximally-intense responses. In contrast, the MC protocol was done in its entirety per standardized procedures (e.g., at a steady 50 rpm cadence in a seated position). Thus, CG workouts comprising episodes of speed-play and vigorous jumps/lifts may produce transient maximal exercise efforts." @default.
