- W2022632623 abstract "Abstract Students from Latin American countries who participate in the secondary-level, cross-cultural homestay exchange program of Youth for Understanding (YFU) have a history of failure to complete the exchange at a rate significantly greater than that of students from other parts of the world. Differences in gender stereotypes and in gender role expectations between Latin America and the USA was hypothesized to be an influential factor. This study found that an orientation using a modified cultural assimilator format and focusing on such issues was effective in assisting these students to be as successful as students who were less at-risk. Fifty-three Latin American and West German YFU students participated in this year-long study to (a) determine the influence of similarity of gender stereotypes between USA host parents and exchange students on student functioning (Question 1), (b) test the effect of an orientation to gender role expectations in the USA on student functioning (Question 2), and (c) determine which gender-related issues were problematic for the students (Question 3). Criterion variables for Questions 1 and 2 were (a) ratings of behavioral functioning in the exchange by YFU Area Representatives and (b) rate of referral to the YFU counseling service. Question 3 was investigated using semi-structured interviews. Results showed that (a) student/host parent gender stereotype-compatibility was not a factor in student functioning, (b) the effectiveness of the orientation in improving the functioning of Latin American students approached significance on the first criterion and was significant on the second, and (c) concerns noted as problematic were culture-specific and focused on behavioral aspects of gender role issues." @default.
