- W2022648710 abstract "SUMMARY There is an abundance of literature about the role of trustees in preserving and advancing the missions of their organizations. Numerous resources exist on governance, stewardship, volunteer leadership development, and trustees' roles in fund raising. These contributions to the field have affected the ethics and practices of many not-for-profit organizations. Current environmental changes mandate additional discussion on ways that board and staff can work together to assure the viability of their organizations. Generous government funding played a pivotal role in the growth of many residential treatment centers for several decades. Therefore, the search for philanthropic support often became secondary. However, dramatic decreases in government funding, closer regulatory scrutiny, and charities' increased accountability to donors has changed that landscape. This dictates a review of the manner in which organizations educate their trustees about their roles in fund raising. Based on the authors' experience with their organization's two-year journey with this process, the article explores: (1) the effective involvement of trustees in strategic planning and program policy as they are related to fund raising, and (2) the partnership between trustees and staff in creating an organizational spirit of mission-driven support." @default.
