- W2022656378 abstract "As part of a study of factors involved in non-specific resistance to infection, observations were made on the cellular response of mice to a staphylococcal extract (SE). This substance had previously been shown to enhance the resistance of suckling and adult mice within a few hours to staphylococcal, E. coli and herpes simplex virus infections. It was found that after intra-abdominal administration of SE, there was an increase in volume and change in the cell composition of peritoneal fluid. Polymorphs soon replaced the mononuclears as the predominant cell. This occurred by 3 hours and persisted for 24 hours. After 24 hours, striking changes were observed in the mononuclear cells. They appeared larger and many had large cytoplasmic vacuoles. These were still seen at 72 hours. The cellular response in the brain was also observed in mice which had been given a preliminary injection of SE intra-abdominally and 20 hours later challenged intracerebrally with staphylococci. It was found that by 2 hours there were more polymorphs in the brain of the treated mice than in the controls. These quantitative changes were less apparent later. Some of the implications of these observations are discussed." @default.
