- W2022707532 abstract "The fluorescent material extracted from adult houseflies (Musca domestica) by 2:1 chloroform/methanol can be divided into two distinct fractions, one methanol/water-soluble and the other chloroform-soluble. Much of the age-associated increase in fluorescence occurs in the methanol/water-fraction and is largely associated with the eyes. This fluorescence has the properties of a pteridine-like compound. The chloroform-soluble fluorescence, although much smaller in amount than the methanol/water-soluble fluorescence, also increases with age and is distributed more uniformly throughout the insect. Fluorescence measurements were carried out on extracts from flies of different ages which had no esterified linoleic acid in their lipids and compared with those from flies containing large amounts of this dienoic fatty acid. The fluorescence of both methanol/water-and chloroform-extracts from both groups of flies increased with the age of the fly showing that at least part of the increase in fluorescence was independent of the presence of the polyunsaturated fatty acid. However, statistical analysis of the results suggested that a small proportion (about 15%) of the age associated increase in the chloroform-soluble fraction from thirteen day old housefly was dependent on the presence of linoleic acid in the fly." @default.
