A procedure for choosing the chemical-shift phase-encoding times for a given spectrum of the object to be imaged is described. This leads to a minimization of the influence of noise on the signal separation, enabling short encoding times which are advantageous in case of short T 2 relaxation times, strong spin-spin couplings, or considerable B 0 inhomogeneities.
