- W2022896927 abstract "This paper is motivated by a long-range goal of developing a new class of turbo-machine where fluid impellers, created through supersonic wave structures, replace mechanical impellers. This paper is an exploratory study to show how effectively supersonic wave structures can fulfill this goal, and to provide some fundamental insight as to the behavior. A novel device is presented which, by means of a free spinning rotor placed in front of a supersonic nozzle, causes a rotating interface to form between an energetic primary fluid and a secondary fluid to be compressed. This rotating interface is shown to act like a pseudo-impeller in driving the less energetic secondary fluid. A simple two-dimensional example is provided which helps understand the physical processes occurring in the three-dimensional configuration. A hypothesis is offered which contends that the use of pseudo-impellers has great potential in reducing the cost and size of turbomachinery in many applications, and in possibly improving efficiency." @default.
