- W2022930189 abstract "In a recent study of the normal structure of the lumbar vertebral arch (Krenz and Troup, 1973), serial bone slices of 2 mm thickness were cut from whole, undecalcified and unembedded vertebrae. An industrial milling machine, fitted with a circular slitting-saw, was used to cut the slices. This technique, which can be used for a variety of bone specimens, produces bone slices which are found to be of even and constant thickness, to suffer little mechanical trauma and consequent irregularity of the cut surface, and to lend themselves to the production of clear and finely-detailed radiographs. A suitable machine for this work is the Adcock and Shipley Model 1 ES-G (Fig. 1). This model is fitted with a work-table which can be adjusted in three planes. A simple machine-vice, into which the specimen is clamped, must be mounted onto the table, and a stub arbor to hold the saw blade must be fitted to the motorized drive of the machine. As the saw blade rotates the table moves the specimen towards the cutting edge. The thickness of the slice cut is preset by the manual advancement of a micrometer dial. Provision is also made for cooling the cutting edge with a stream of oil/water mixture (e.g., Castrol Cooledge, diluted 1 + 12 with water). The circular saw-blades are known as high-speed metal slitting-saws. At the time of writing there are no published metric British Standard specifications for slitting-saws and therefore imperial sizes are given here." @default.
