- W2022956894 abstract "Paleointensity data for the geomagnetic field derived by Thelliers' method are summarized for the Pleistocene and Pliocene periods. They are divided into groups corresponding to the Brunhes normal epoch (0.01–0.7 my), to the rest of the Pleistocene (0.7–2.5 my) and to the Pliocene (2.5–10.0 my), and also into normal and reversed polarity groups. Mean field intensity and standard deviation are compiled for each group. The older two groups are shown to be statistically indistinguishable from each other, but the Brunhes normal epoch is significantly different. The distribution of magnitudes of the corresponding geomagnetic dipoles for the Pliocene and Pleistocene, obtained after levelling the sample density within each period, is of normal type with 8.9 × 1025 gauss cm3 and 3.4 × 1025 gauss cm3 for the mean and the standard deviation respectively. The high density values in the Brunhes normal epoch may be the main reason for the big amplitude of the magnetic anomalies observed at the crests of mid-ocean ridges." @default.
